Daunia

Daunia

Friday 01 April 2022

The territory known with the name of Daunia corresponds with the north part of Apulia and includes the areas of Tavoliere, Gargano and Subappennino Dauno.
This territory represents the perfect combination of plain, mountain and sea and it offers a wide variety of scenarios to the spectator tanks to the presence of wheat fields, caves, seabed and a dense vegetation of the “Parco Nazionale del Gargano”.
This area has a very ancient tradition about winemaking. It was present at the time of the Romans.

The pilgrims crossed the region during their long journey towards Terra Santa and at the time of their stay in Apulia, they toasted with local wines and organized propitiatory festival on the occasion of grape harvest in Monte Sant’Angelo, the site of many famous pilgrimages.
Daunia is, above all, an area characterized by an extraordinary wide production of white wines.
The calcareous, clayey and sandy soil represents the perfect setting for some specific white grape varieties; this is the case for “Bombino Bianco”, frequently blended with “Trebbiano Toscano” in order to obtain a particularly mellow white wine.
But not only white wines; Daunia is also the homeland of full-bodied red wines that originate from red grape varieties like Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Susumaniello or Somarello; a rare and precious grape variety popular in the area of Lucera and Tuccanese, another “pearl” of “Daunia wines”.
Very important is also the diffusion of “Nero di Troia”, an autochthonous grape variety that produces primarily pure wine and that has a good level of wine aging.
