The Gargano promontory, which begins in Manfredonia and ends in Rodi Garganico, is an interesting tourist area both for its beauty and for the fishing opportunities it offers.
Starting from the north, the change begins that announces the rocky presence of the promontory itself. In this area of the Gargano coast, divers seem excluded from the practice of their favorite sport due to the sandy bottom; the shore area, on the other hand, is crossed by mullets, mormore, some rare sea bass and a series of flat fish of the different species present in the Adriatic.
At the foot of the promontory, exactly to the east of the Monacelli rocks, there is a small landing pier 50 meters long with a depth of 3 meters at the head; then appear the white houses of Peschici gathered on the top of a high arid promontory and still stretches of high and steep coast, lapped by the current that pushes towards the land.
On the small rocky promontories the Torre di Cala Lunga, the Torre Gusmai, the Torre di Spinale and the Torre di Porticello are visible. Unlike the previous one, this sector of the coast offers some variations to the diver: the seabed, in fact, mixes with seaweed and sand, creating the ideal habitat for white breams, hasty salps, mullets and some specimens of sea bream. After passing the Tower of Porticello, you reach Vieste, characteristic for its tall and leaning houses; at the foot of the town opens the Cala di San Lorenzo which, protected by a pier, forms a small port.
From Vieste the coast runs high and steep to the south and is surrounded by a seabed rich in corvine, sea bass, grouper and abundant scorpion fish. After Torre Gattarella and Torre San Felice, Cala San Felice opens up where the seabed does not drop to prohibitive heights; here occurs the phenomenon of centralization for which large areas seem completely depopulated and under a single den you can find, gathered together, the fish of the entire sector.
The dominant species are white breams, black crows, followed by groupers, mullets and some mammoth sea bass that is only encountered at sunrise or sunset. In the sand of the bottom you may also be lucky enough to meet the rather rare sand croaker, whose size sometimes exceeds ten kilos. We recall that the Testa del Gargano is characterized by a high, rocky and sheer stretch of coast, marked by small promontories surmounted by old quadrangular towers.
The Cala di Campi opens immediately to the south, facing the tip of Torre di Campi to the north-east; followed by the Torre di Portogreco and the Cala di Pugnochiuso, with depths of less than 4 meters. In the middle of a steep slope you can see the Torre Proposte, then, on Punta Agnuli, fronted by fish shoals of 4 meters up to 300 meters from the coast, a white cylindrical tower appears.
Beyond this, a small landing opens on the beach where the Torre del Porto stands. To the west there is Monte Saraceno which falls sheer to the sea forming the inaccessible Punta Grugno. Subsequently, the coast, flat on the sea, is connected with accentuated inclinations to the rugged slopes of the mountains behind it and does not present significant points up to Manfredonia.
