Produttori vini Manduria

The Consorzio Produttori Vini has always shown so much love and dedication towards vine-growing that nowadays they are the paladins of an extraordinary nectar, the Primitivo Wine. Indeed, their history is closely related to this grape variety.

The history began in 1928 when a small group of "enlightened" winemakers took over an old factory and created the "Federazione Vini" (i.e. wine confederation), an association of wine producers that four years later, on the 9th July 1932, would make official its legal status as a cooperative with the establishment of the "Consorzio Produttori Vini e Mosti Rossi superiori da taglio per la zona di Manduria" (i.e. a consortium for the production of superior red wines and musts in the area of Manduria).

The destiny of the company is indissolubly linked to the main product of the land, the "Primitivo di Manduria" wine, which was at first relegated to the low rank of meliorative wine to strengthen the noble French and northern Italian labels. Then it was mistreated and humiliated during the dark years of the methanol, but finally, it was recovered when around the mid-90s there was a change aiming at the quality of the bottle. And so, today, the certainty that good wine still sprouts from the fields has encouraged this company to confine its production base. In such a manner, thanks to the support of an agronomist, it can better follow the work of its members and ensure that healthy grapes with superior organoleptic qualities can be produced every year.

The Consortium now has 900 hectares of vineyards, more than half of which are still grown with the traditional sapling system, and it strenuously defends the work of 400 small wine artisans, the only ones who can boast the name of "Masters of Primitivo".
